These days you can choose between 2 different main groups of laptops. Netbooks usually have a 9 or 10 inch screen, weight 2 or 3 pounds, and usually cost less than $400. Other laptops have a screen anywhere between 13 and 17 inches, weight a lot more, and usually cost more than $500. First, if you are someone on a strict budget, a netbook is probably the way to go since they are so incredibly cheap these days. If budget is less of an issue, it's best to understand your computer usage habits in order to decide between a netbook and a traditional notepad computer.

A netbook is best when you can afford to sacrifice a larger screen and more processing power for extreme portability. If you are usually using the computer on the road where a computer than weights 3 pounds instead of 6 makes a difference, a netbook is probably good for you. It will be easy to use on an airplane or public transportation, and the battery will last a long time between charging sessions.

A traditional notebook computer is better if you spend your time working a desks, for example in your home and in your office. This way, you will be able to use a larger screen and have access to more power which will make more advanced tasks like image and video editing seem more streamlined. In this case, you can put up with a few more pounds in exchange for the luxury of a bigger screen. They often come with more RAM and hard drive space, and may come with a more advanced operating system like Microsoft Windows Vista.
